In certain Italian Telegram groups, controlled by the channel "Russian Embassy in Italy" and active from January 2023 to June 2025, I observed—by infiltrating with nicknames, performing astroturfing, and pretending to support the Russians' (clearly fake) cause of "peace" in Europe—an extensive traffic of users connected to nostalgic yet dangerous networks close to the Red Brigades or similar terrorist movements.


These users often spoke in chats ("International Network" controlled by a group and independent French journalists of "Reseaux Internationale" with many pro-Russian guests) about "sabotage of NATO bases in Italy or foreign bases hosted in Italy."


One of their repeated "homilies" as a slogan concerned the alleged salvation from Nazism in the 1940s that the Soviets supposedly brought as a gift to poor oppressed Europeans. Historical sources speak of partisans, but in no history book are so-called Russians cited as having actually saved Europeans' lives during that period.


But it does not end there! In that same period (2023-2025), anti-NATO dissidents glorified mercenaries sent to Russia (whose deeds were narrated by the aforementioned networks, portraying Ukrainian armies as the real "impostors" and mercenaries).


Following this "thread of Ariadne," one encountered groups run by the Russian GRU and FSB that showcased the damage inflicted by Russian drones on Ukrainian military and civilian infrastructure.


There were connections to the Oklandinsky web platform used by Russians (known as Ok.ru). The resonance chamber of such constellations of Italo-Russian groups was inflamed by Russian associations present in Rome and Milan to teach Russian language and culture, financed by the Moscow Chamber of Commerce and the Chinese Bank with branches scattered in Milan.


Conclusion

The metaphor of Russian Neptune aptly summarizes the dynamic: ex-military and European social groups fallen into the trap of the "songs of the Sirens" of Russian propaganda.

They were not choirs of peace, but war drums disguised as culture and memory.

These episodes demonstrate how counter-information and counterintelligence are indispensable tools to defend European sovereignty.
